The purpose of The Training Instructional Designer position is to facilitate training development and support the training across our business. This position will design, develop, implement, evaluate and continuously improve our learning and processes using a range of practical learning solutions.  The Instructional designer creates practical, relevant, and engaging training interventions by applying Adult Learning Theory in the use of a wide variety of training tools and technologies.    

 

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Training Systems and Services team, the Instructional Designer is responsible for design/development, project management and implementation of training courseware to support Safety & Operational Discipline.  This position must work in close partnership with individuals across roles and divisions to develop and execute comprehensive learning solutions to achieve key organizational objectives and metrics.

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include but are not necessarily limited to the following activities:

  • Designs and develops various traditional and non-traditional learnings.  Examples include instructor-led, computer-based, on-the-job training content, and blended learning content and evaluation materials.
    • Assesses, designs and develops learnings across a variety of modalities (ex. Web, classroom, distance learning). 
  • Evaluates employees' training needs.  Collaborates with Training Program Managers and Content Owners to ascertain job responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and abilities for selected audiences and jobs.  Performs task, content, organizational, performance and gap analyses.
    • Demonstrates advanced skills in interviewing Content Owners to determined non-documented technical information that is applicable to training; Analyzes complex information and writes comprehensive training material to a level that is suitable for end-user consumption.
    • Coordinates and manages scope, deliverables, and delivery of learning solutions internally and with external partners. Provides performance feedback, including forecasting completion dates, identifying risks and issues, mitigating performance risks, and informing management of accomplishments, plans, and activities. 
    • Conducts pre, during, post learning development review meetings with Content Owners and Training supervisor to outline process guidelines, roles / responsibilities, and review feedback. Reviews and compiles feedback resulting in one single company deliverable.
  • Produces job aids and performance support documentation.
    • Develops and constructs training manuals, materials and aids ensuring material accomplishes the stated learning/organizational objectives.
    • Follows processes and procedures for quality assurance and technical accuracy of training material content.
    • Conducts regular evaluations of training and management development programs utilizing systematic instructional design methodology and implementing revisions where necessary.
  • Collaborates with Content Owners, business stakeholders, and Training Program Managers in assessing, recommending, designing, developing and maintaining instructor-led and web-based training programs/materials to ensure the information is current, accurate, relevant and complete.
    • Proposes plans to reduce classroom time, increase self-study and online learning with proven return on investment.
    • Proficiency in needs analysis and interpreting gaps and impact potential.
    • Ability to work independently and make decisions related to design and development strategies of training.
  • Trains faculty to effectively incorporate sound training techniques and skills into the developed training materials.
  • Evaluates training effectiveness: curriculum, instructional design, delivery, and outcomes (to include financial analysis).
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience in instructional design and adult education
  • Proficient in using course development tools such as Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate at various levels across organizational boundaries, and influence others without hierarchical authority.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving, listening and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative
  • Strong skills with Microsoft business products, e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.

 

Preferred

  • Familiarity with learning management systems such as Success Factors or Workday
  • Familiarity with the natural gas industry and with the specific business unit served           
  • Experience and knowledge of federal and state regulations related to our operations including but not limited to OSHA, DOT/PHMSA, FERC, etc.
  • 4+ years of experience in industry operations, EHS, pipeline safety, training or similar background
