The Linux System Administrator is responsible for effective installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. The system administration tasking will be focused on improving the stability and performance of the system, maintaining and improving the security posture of the systems, continuous monitoring of system health, and troubleshooting issues that arise.


Specifically this individual is accountable for Red Hat Linux, VMWare and tools/systems (e.g. Red Hat Satellite, vCenter) that support infrastructure as well as leading research and development (R&D) around Continual Service Improvement (CSI). Responsibilities on these systems include SA engineering, performance, stability, monitoring, support, patching, maintenance and R&D to ensure continual operation.

Systems Analyst III - IT Job Duties:

SA Engineering

  • Conduct evaluations of new technologies, apply engineering of systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs.  Plan the future state of the server infrastructure.  Work with our key vendors on roadmap items.
  • Act as the SME for Red Hat Linux, Satellite, x86 server hardware (HP and Cisco), and Virtualization Infrastructure (VMWare). 
  • Assess and interpret business/customer needs and requirements. 
  • Provide engineering and SA direction to managed service provider.
  • Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Install and configure systems which support infrastructure and/or R&D activities.
  • Develop and maintain OS installation and configuration procedures.
  • Define and maintain OS and server hardware system standards.  Ensure managed service provider is following these standards.
  • Contribute to and maintain security posture of the system in accordance with Williams Information Security policies.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible implement, automated approaches for service requests and system administration tasks. 

Operations and Support

  • Install and maintain security patches via Red Hat Satellite and other mean on the operational and development systems, this includes but is not limited to, Red Hat Linux and VMWare. Work with managed service provider to report security patch compliance.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups and replication.
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request as necessary.
  • Provide Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies.  Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Part of on-call 24/7 rotation to repair and recover from hardware or software failures.  Coordinate and communicate with vendors, service providers and impacted constituencies.
  • Maintenance

  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis via Red Hat Satellite, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary.
  • Upgrade and configure system software that supports infrastructure applications per project or operational needs.
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures, ensure managed service provider is following.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.  Configure OS, CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.



  • Required Skills:

  • 5+ years of system administration experience in Red Hat Linux environments and proficient in tasks such as shell scripting, automating task scheduling, analyzing log files, managing user accounts and groups, configuring IP tables, and setting up mail services.
  • 2+ years’ experience with Red Hat Satellite
  • 5+ years’ experience with VMware vCenter and vSphere
  • Familiarity with web-based technologies, including but not limited to, reverse proxy servers, SSL certificate configuration, three-tier architecture, service oriented architecture, enterprise service bus, http, and differences between browsers.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and independent, self-starter.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written correspondence) in a professional and courteous manner with technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Able to participate in 24/7/365 on-call rotation, some rare occasions to travel to remote sites/data centers
  • Ability to coach and provide guidance to less experienced staff.



  • Bachelor’s degree, with a technical major, such as MIS, engineering or computer science, preferred or equivalent experience.  MBA a plus.
  • Related Red Hat cert a big plus (e.g. Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE))

  • UNIX (AIX, Solaris)
  • Familiarity with adjacent infrastructure technologies (e.g. networking, storage (NetApp), security, data center, database (Oracle))
