The Environmental Specialist (ES) is responsible for providing permitting and compliance support to Operations and Tactical Projects & Technical Services groups within the Atlantic-Gulf Operating Area. This person will coordinate, develop, monitor, administer and evaluate environmental compliance and remediation activities at assigned company field locations by working closely with operations to ensure facilities are operated in compliance with permit conditions while maintaining a cost efficient, regulatory compliant and environmentally safe operation.


The Environmental Specialist primarily uses Williams Integrated Management System (WIMS) as a resource to execute environmental permitting and compliance activities. This position reports to the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Manager assigned to the Operating Area. The successful candidate will be located at the Princeton Division Office in Princeton, New Jersey.




Field / Multimedia


  • Prepare and submit NPDES or state wastewater discharge permits. Develop and implement site specific SPCC and Storm Water Pollution Prevention plans.
  • Assist locations in characterization, storage, transportation and disposal of hazardous and industrial wastes.
  • Provide on-site as well as office support assistance to other DEEs with their compliance activities and special projects.
  • Take the lead in coordinating the audit program and reports and reviewing/revising existing company environmental activities and procedures.
  • Ensure and evaluate compliance with all federal, state, local and company regulations and policies
  • Conduct formal and frequent informal inspections and develop corrective measures.
  • Review and maintain environmental files as required.
  • Coordinate emergency response to releases, issue internal and external notifications and provide written reports.
  • Conduct required annual spill prevention and hazardous waste handling employee training.
  • Ensure compliance with permits and verify that required inspections or reports are completed in a timely manner.
  • Identify potential compliance issues, and develop practices or alternatives to achieve desired operational goal while maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain team member relationships with construction and operations.
  • Stay current with local environmental issues to ensure company's interests are considered. This may require participation in local and/or regional interest groups or associations.
  • Coordinate compliance with Title V air permits:
    • Provide agency notification for testing events.
    • Review testing protocols and reports.
    • Review and/or Submit test reports.
    • Provide input on permit renewals and amendments.
    • Assist in negotiation of any non-compliance issues.
  • Coordinate remediation projects with districts and contractors:
    • Assist with scoping, scheduling and work plan initiation.
    • Perform agency notifications.
    • Act as liaison between District and Corporate.
    • Oversee day to day contractor operations.
  • Develop and administer methods for the proper disposal of all wastes, in compliance with all requirements, to achieve a cost-effective solution:
    • Conduct sampling and profiling of all wastes and maintain files of results.
    • Evaluate and recommend laboratories, contractors and disposal options.
    • Complete and submit annual waste generation reports.
    • Work with field personnel to minimize waste generation.
    • Recommend and evaluate alternative products and practices to reduce disposal costs.
  • Participate in and facilitate visits by regulatory agencies, consultants and corporate staff.
  • Conduct research and data management for agency requests and environmental staff surveys.
  • Coordinate uniform, company-wide implementations of company environmental policies and procedures.
  • Use intimate knowledge of a field facility or construction project to provide timely and effective responses to requests for service, site inspections, or information.
  • Provide a field resource to assist other Shared Services, Technical Services or Compliance & Natural Resources personnel in providing support for Expansion, Operations or Pipeline Safety projects.



  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or engineering, or related field.
  • At least three years of experience in environmental-related field.
  • Awareness of regulatory and industry governance/guidance.
  • Demonstrate high level of computer competency, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. 
  • Position requires a team player with the ability to multitask, manage shifting priorities and follow through on action items.  
  • Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills essential. 
  • General working knowledge of air quality compliance, water discharge, waste management, and SPCC requirements, as well as familiarity with CAA, CWA, RCRA, CERCLA, SARA, TSCA, DOT, and FERC regulations extremely beneficial.
