The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for providing support to field operations to positively shape and grow the organization’s EH&S culture and practices for Williams’ midstream natural gas gathering & processing assets located in the San Juan Basin. This position will be located in Bloomfield, New Mexico and will report to the Four Corners Area EH&S Supervisor.


Primary functions of the position include:

  • Provide on-going environmental assistance to support Four Corners Area Operations staff with air, water, and waste compliance program management.
  • Assist Operations in proper implementation of company EH&S procedures.
  • Review and interpret applicable environmental permits, laws and regulations and provide guidance to Operations.
  • Prepare environmental reports, permit applications, emission calculations, permit applications, and correspondence for submittal to regulatory agencies.
  • Assess environmental risk, provide recommendation(s) as to the appropriate course of action to address such risk and participate in the implementation of the approved course of action.
  • Assist with negotiation of appropriate permit terms and conditions with regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare and update environmental compliance procedures and training materials.
  • Assist in guiding efforts for the coordination and scheduling of required testing, sampling, monitoring, field inspections, data gathering, and record keeping.
  • Manage compliance information using Williams environmental and operational data management systems.
  • Prepare and track environmental expenditures against budgets and process environmental invoices.
  • Coordinate regular environmental planning, scheduling and cost estimating for either Operations support or Business Development/Project support (including preparation of environmental impact assessments as necessary).
  • Develop and maintain necessary documentation related to environmental compliance programs.
  • Perform environmental compliance audits, due diligence, and incident investigations.
  • Conduct required environmental training and periodic employee awareness programs.
  • Other general environmental duties may be required as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • This position includes regular travel to field facilities in the San Juan Basin, as well as occasional trips to regulatory agency offices and industry trade groups for meetings and other functions.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with other Environmental Services staff, Operations staff, and environmental consultants to maintain data and documents related to permitting, compliance, and company performance metrics.



  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or equivalent technical or scientific field required. Professional certification preferred (PE, PG, CEP, etc.).
  • Minimum of 5+ years recent environmental or directly related experience.
  • This position requires a motivated, hard-working, team player with attention to detail, ability to develop effective solutions to highly complex issues and possess strong organizational, people and communication skills.
  • The successful candidate must be able to take ownership of projects, and be accountable for their successful completion with limited oversight.
  • Experience with the oil & gas industry and/or associated New Mexico, Colorado, and industry specific environmental regulations is preferred
  • Experience and working knowledge of environmental issues and regulations, particularly those related to air, water, or waste.
  • Must be able to effectively direct and manage environmental consultants that provide support for the completion of permitting actions and compliance assurance.
  • A strong aptitude in math, general office (PC-based) computer skills, a moderate level of understanding of relational databases and advanced query skills are expected.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% as needed to meet business needs.
